Google bought Motorola Mobility by $12.5 billion.mobile worlds into a frenzy.

Motorola Mobility, the mobile handset manufacturer, was bought by Google for $12.5 billion – sending the tech and mobile worlds into a frenzy.

Google CEO Larry Page says the deal will “supercharge the Android ecosystem”, a pointed piece of rhetoric clearly aimed at the direction of fellow US tech giant Apple.

For its $12.5 billion, subject to regulatory approval by authorities in the US and European Union, Google gets its hands on not only a mobile handset but also a tablet provider.

Motorola Mobility bought by Google

Google is stressing that Android will remain an open platform, clearly much to the relief of other manufacturers that have thrown their lot in with the operating system.

Promises aside, executives at Samsung, HTC and Sony Ericsson will be watching nervously to see whether Google keeps the so-called good stuff from Android for itself (the same accusation levelled at Google during the ITA Software acquisition saga).

There is also the Blackberry question – will this move also hurt manufacturer RIM?

For the travel industry it is a double-edged sword: fewer platforms is good (easier to develop), but dominance by just one or two players arguably stifles competition.

It could be argued that with Google moving into the the application space, as opposed to their traditional media and infrastructure role, this will cause concentration at a time when such efforts are not benefiting the broader consumer.

This will enable Google to power ahead in integrating solutions that others will find hard to replicate or if they do – in fact, some might argue Google will always have a head start (something it tends to have in search, video and mapping, but less in social, for example).

Where this gets really interesting is around the idea of bringing travel services close to the consumer via mobile.

Blackberry was the first out of the blocks with a dedicated, pre-loaded travel application developed by Worldmate earlier this year.

Apple has also spent the best part of the past 16 months happily filing patents in the US which illustrate what it has in mind for a dedicated iTravel system, included as a native app with each iPhone and iPad.

And now Google has the opportunity to do exactly the same thing.

Until now, manufacturers running the Android operating system have handed the decision making for which apps to use on a handset (travel or otherwise) over to the consumer.

Users would download a metasearch app such as Skyscanner or Kayak, for example, and that would be their product finding tool on a handset. All the other travel-related apps, such as destination guides et al, would happily sit alongside.

But manufacturers do not make a bundle of money from travel-related apps, especially when download volumes can be pretty slim after the initial buzz around a new service.

Product search, however, is another issue entirely.

With a native travel application already on Blackberry, one coming soon no doubt to iPhones and iPads and, now, Google having the ability to ship travel search as a native app on all Motorola devices, the travel search ecosystem will change yet again.

As one mobile exec has been saying in various forms for some time: “The battle in mobile and travel is not about downloadable apps or the mobile web – it is about how devices will make travel tools a core part of their functionality, alongside calendars, mail, weather and images.”

In the same way that Google wants to somehow put travel front and centre within browser search (hey, it didn’t buy ITA Software just to get the inside track on the tricky recruitment puzzles), with a handset under its control the same can now be applied to the mobile space with a native application.

Of course, this deal isn’t all about travel and native applications, far from it – but illustrates more of the wider strategy about how service providers such as Google clearly feel that they need to own more of the foodchain than they did with the browser web.

Android Users:MegaVideo App Allows to Upload Directly From Their Phones

Android Users:MegaVideo App Allows to Upload Directly From Their Phones

Anyone who has used MegaUpload as a file sharing service knows how simple and yet robust it is. Servers are snappy, download times are good, and its simplicity is definitely to be appreciated. Well, MegaUpload has a sister service, MegaVideo, that takes that concept and focuses on video uploading. And to go one step better, they have an Android app in beta available in the market right now, to offer instant uploading (and playing of uploaded videos) from your phone, anytime, anywhere. It will also allow you to download videos from the hosting site. Other features currently in development:
•Tablet support
•HD videos
•Link auto-grabbing
•Multiple link
•Send-link-to option
•Download speed widget
•Search feature
If this sounds like an app that would help you out, head over the Android market to download the beta, at a budget-friendly cost of “free.”

Nexus S 2.3.3 update slightly changes screen color.

Nexus S 2.3.3 update slightly changes screen color.
There’s been a bit of buzz online about the new Nexus S Android 2.3.3 update making the coloring on the display a little ‘different’ than what it was before the update. Google’s Ry Guy has let us know that this update and the effects on the coloring is intended to tweak the Nexus S display, and therefore, it was expected.

With your new OTA complete, you may notice a slight difference in the way colors are displayed on your Nexus S. For Nexus S, we have adjusted the color temperature settings to more accurately reflect darker colors at all brightness levels. The Gingerbread UI being darker, we found that the colors were not as accurate when the device was being used at lower brightness levels. For example, some users reported that the initial color temperature was too high leading to some darker greys having a reddish tone; with the new color temperature this is no longer the case.

Engadget went on and updated their own Google Nexus S and found the update did in fact change the color. Whether this is intended or not, still leaves some upset about the changes, as many Nexus S users have reported their unhappiness on forums as well. Here is a good look at the changes from Android 2.3.2, to 2.3.3, which Engadget is happy with after the update. I have to say as well, it does look like an improvement overall. have a look below.

HTC Flyer 499 EUR,shows up on German website for sale- Wi-Fi,
The HTC Flyer Tablet we all heard about at MWC 2011 has popped up in Wi-Fi version only on a German Electronics site for sale. The German site is called ‘CyberPort‘ and is offering the Wi-Fi only version for 499 EUR ($688 US).

If you’re in the market for an Android tablet that actually has a good kick to it and don’t want to wait for it to launch in North America, grab this, cause you really only need a Wi-Fi model since you most likely already have an Android smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Tab in 8.9 inch model may launch next month

Samsung Galaxy Tab in 8.9 inch model may launch next month
Samsung introduced us all to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1inch running Android 3.0 at MWC this year, and although we haven’t heard as much about it since then as other tablets, like the Xoom or LG G-Slate, we’re hearing about another Galaxy Tab that may be available as soon as next month. It’s a Galaxy Tab, but it’s 8.9 inches in size, right in between the 10.1 and the 7 inch models.

A source at Yonhap News Agency is reporting that they have information suggesting not only that it may be in production, but that it may be available next month. If this comes true, then those other tablets may have more to worry about then simply competing with the Apple iPad2 when it comes out, but rather the small army of tablets Samsung is producing.
We hope to hear more about this very soon, and we’ll be sure to let you know what we find.

HTC Desire:Android 2.3 Coming this Spring for the HTC Desire

HTC Desire:Android 2.3 Coming this Spring for the HTC Desire
great news for HTC Desire, well,Android 2.3 Coming this Spring for the HTC Desire
HTC’s new lineup of Android smartphone unveiled at Mobile World Congress will supposedly launch this spring with Android 2.4. That includes the all new HTC Desire S. The original Desire will be getting a little treat as well: an Android OS upgrade. It won’t take the phone to Android 2.4, but it will bring it into the candyland of Gingerbread with Android 2.3, according to an HTC rep at the global-focused mobile event.

The upgrade to Gingerbread for the Desire will roll out two months after the release of the Desire S. This works out to range of late spring/early summer. HTC, unlike some other companies, tends to be a bit more punctual with their Android updates, but we’ll say sometime before summer ends at the worse.

With Gingerbread coming to the original, the small updates in to the Desire S suddenly make it feel a bit less appealing.

Acer Iconia Smart 4.8inch Android smartphone hands on

Acer Iconia Smart 4.8inch Android smartphone hands on.
acer iconia-smart,Here is the new Acer Iconia Smart running Android 2.3, and looking long and slender. The look of the device is pretty nice, the fact its running Gingerbread is pretty sweet too. I’m just not sold on the size of this device. I’ll get to that in a second.
The Acer Iconia Smart has an 8 megapixel rear end with a 2 megapixel front, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and 1024×480 resolution at 21:9 ratio, 720p video playback and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Pretty good specs right? I know. It’ll cost you about $499 and should be in Europe first around April, then the US by June/July.Now, back to the sizing. It’s a long 4.8 inches…I mean, I have a 4 inch screen with 800×480 resolution and that feels big enough in my jean pocket. The press release says its “100% Smartphone, 100% tablet”…umm, no, I don’t think so. Remember Dell tried that with the Streak at 5inches, and it really didn’t fair well for them, they decided to go to the 7 inch and 10 inch models instead. I’m really not buying the 1024×480 resolution, great for internet usage, and reading ebooks, but terrible for games and watching videos cause you’ll have these blank areas of screen on either side. The UI is much nicer than the Dell UI however with some changes to the notification bar being on the bottom and what not, but the size man! I can’t get over how awkward it’ll feel in my pocket, unless MC Hammer pants come back, then fine.
What do you think About Acer Iconia Smart?

NEC Dual Screen,Keyboarded Android Tablets Coming To Japan

NEC Dual Screen,Keyboarded Android Tablets Coming To Japan.video with info.
We got a few minutes to tour a couple brand new products from NEC that are destined to hit the shores of Japan for too long. The first Android tablet you see demoed has dual-screens with special multi-tasking features built-in while the second device is essentially an Android netbook/laptop. The latter will be out this week while the former is coming in the next couple months – both in Japan.

NEC hopes to gain popularity with these tablets and offer them in Europe and the United States, but I have to question that possibility. After seeing the XOOM, Optimus Pad, and Galaxy S2, I simply dont see the point in buying any type of Android Tablet that is running 2.X.
Android 3.0 is optimized for tablets and you can tell – most of the Android 2.X tablets are buggy, glitchy, underpowered, and the next generation is already arriving. Manufacturers would be smart to shelve any tablets they’ve got running Android 2.X and immediately begin working on launching products with Android 3.0 if they want to seriously compete. And of course, the idea is to get AHEAD of the curve, so perhaps focusing on Android 3.0 isn’t enough. Maybe they should be working on Android 3.X and beyond… and in that case it’s a matter of getting enough access.

Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 2 Early Leaked Press Info.

Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 2 Press Info Leaked Early

The Galaxy S2 will sport a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus multi-touch screen, a 1 GHz dual-core processor (Exynos?) and Bluetooth 3.0. The device will also support WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n and come packed with HSPA+ compatibility. Sounds like a powerhouse of a device to me. Here’s to hoping Samsung stays on the ball and the device sees some “timely” updates. Why are you laughing? Although, it shouldn’t be that much of a deal breaker for you since the device will be released with Gingerbread (2.3).It’s also being touted that the device is super thin and light, coming in at 8.49 mm at its thickest point. It’s weighing in at 116g (4.09 ounces). If you thought the previous Galaxy S device was thin and light, you’re in for a bit of a surprise. And of course, no Samsung device is complete without the latest version of TouchWiz.
Based on the press release photo and specs, it appears as though Samsung has plans to bring the thunder with their upcoming smartphone and tablet release. The Samsung Galaxy S2 should be making its appearance at MWC on the 14th, but we’ve managed to search the depths of the Internet and scrape up some pre-released info on the device for you. The specs and photo were leaked from a Korean blog called Paran, which revealed some pretty hefty particulars.

It’s also being touted that the device is super thin and light, coming in at 8.49 mm at its thickest point. It’s weighing in at 116g (4.09 ounces). If you thought the previous Galaxy S device was thin and light, you’re in for a bit of a surprise. And of course, no Samsung device is complete without the latest version of TouchWiz.
And as we mentioned before, the blog also leaked info about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, which is purported to have a 10-inch screen and rocking none other than Honeycomb (3.0) You can also expect to see a 1 GHz dual-core processor, an 8 MP camera and “full HD”, most likely referring to 720p recording (a bit of a translation mix up on the Korean blog). The device will also come with rich media dual surround sound speakers. We’re sure to see more on the tablet at MWC, so don’t forget to check back with Talk Android. Overall, these devices are packing some serious punch and will definitely be worthy contenders in the ever expanding Android market. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
Update:Our good friends over at Android Central managed to get their hands on this photo.

Android 2.4 Coming In April On ViewSonic ViewPad 4 First?

Android 2.4 Coming In April On ViewSonic ViewPad 4 First To have.here is Specs for the ViewSonic’s ViewPad 4:
Android 2.4,Adobe Flash 10.1,720 HD Video Recording & Playback,HDMI 720p Output,5 Meg Camera with Autofocus,Bluetooth 2.1,WiFi 802.11 b/g/n,4.1? Multi-Touch Display.

It looks like there is a possibility that we could at least see one handset sporting “Ice Cream” or “Ice Cream Sandwich” in April before the Gingerbread updates roll out, “if” they even roll out. That’s a crazy thought, isn’t it? In an exclusive interview with Pocket-lint, ViewSonic has stated that their ViewPad 4 smartphone will come packed running Android 2.4 upon launch, which will be sometime in April. Supposedly, the update will allow for some of those Honeycomb elements we heard Mr. Andrew Kovacs mention, which we should see trickle down onto smartphones.
According to sources at Pocket-lint, 2.4 is being released to ensure that dual-core apps customized for Honeycomb (3.0) have the ability to function with single core devices. And get this, it will still be called Gingerbread! Huh? That’s right, according to those same sources, the current Gingerbread 2.3 doesn’t make this possible. This is why we could see a big push for 2.4 on mobile devices ahead of Android 2.3. It looks like this could be the single cause as to why we are seeing a slow implementation of the 2.3 Gingerbread update on devices other than the Nexus S.
The source states:“It’s to ensure compatibility with dual-core apps,” …. “it will still be called Gingerbread.”
So, there you have it folks, it looks like aside from the Nexus S, it’s as though 2.3 wasn’t even really supposed to roll out on devices, but instead the Android 2.4 update is the significant one, as it bridges the gap for us, allowing for those Honeycomb elements to arrive on smartphones and allow those dual core apps to run on single core phones.
The folks over at Phandroid had similar news to corroborate this on Friday:“We’ve just gotten word from a trusted source that Google has begun building a new branch of code – being called GRI17 (Gingerbread post-Honeycomb, aka “Ice Cream”) – that aims to bring some of the new elements found in Honeycomb over to phones.”The source at ViewSonic states:
“This latest update to the ViewSonic Europe ViewPad range will position the device as one of the first multi-media handsets to be supported by Google’s new operating system,”
So, the hardest part will be waiting for all of this to pan out, in my opinion. But don’t worry gang, we’ll keep digging to feed you the goods on this as best we as can. One thing is for sure though, Android is certainly going to get a lot more exciting for consumers over the next several months. And as I have stated many times in previous posts, what the heck is an iPhone?

first dual-touchscreen Android™ smartphone, Kyocera Echo™, exclusively from Sprint. This Android-powered device features two high-resolution 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen displays connected by a patent-pending “pivot hinge” that enables the two displays to operate independently, side-by-side or combined to form an oversized 4.7-inch (diagonally) integrated display.

Kyocera Echo operates on the Android 2.2 system and has access to more than 100,000 apps in Android Market™ – everything from Facebook to Angry Birds. Additional key features include:The Kyocera Echo has 2-screens, each screen being 3.5-inches and 800 x 480 pixel resolution
*When closed, the Echo appears to be a regular phone
* Unhinge/swivel the echo and can see BOTH screens at the SAME TIME
* You can either run different applications on each screen (single screen mode) or you can “combine” the screens and run one application on both with an effective 4.7-inch screen size

* Sprint’s nationwide 3G network and Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g)*
* Wi-Fi hotspot capability, which supports wireless connections for up to five devices

My once concern is regarding how the Echo will play with Android apps on the market. Will it have compatability issues? Sprint has already opened a developer program for the device that will include an SDK allowing devs to optimize their apps and games for the dual screen interface, but how about those who haven’t optimized… will there be any complications or problems? Let’s hope not because the Echo is a cool idea

Motorola Nixes Android 2.1 Update for CLIQ XT !Android News

Motorola Nixes Android 2.1 Update for CLIQ XT Owners.Android News
It's a sad day for anyone out there that's still sporting the Motorola Cliq XT, as Motorola has officially announced that they would be stopping development of Android 2.1 for the device. If you recall, we heard rumors a couple months back that a 2.1 update was very-much in the works for the Cliq XT and that it would be available Q1 of this year. Seems like Motorola just figured it wasn't worth the trouble anymore. The company stated:“After comprehensive testing of the Android 2.1 upgrade for the CLIQ XT, we have concluded that this device will remain on Android 1.5. We realize many of you were anxiously awaiting this upgrade, but we aim to deliver software upgrades only when it will provide a better customer experience."Our product team members worked for months to attempt to create a version of Android 2.1 that would perform well on the CLIQ XT. When the software could not meet the basic performance standards required, they went back to the drawing board multiple times. They gave it everything they had. We even took the unprecedented step of investigating the benefits of code provided by the independent developer community to try to improve XT performance. In the end, we were not able to develop a version of Android 2.1 for CLIQ XT that would deliver an optimal customer experience."
So although it sounds like they "gave it everything they had", I've got a couple friends that still use this phone, and something tells me they aren't going to be too happy to hear this news. Another one bites the dust!
